Description

Join us for BIKE THE SITES:
The Official Design for Distancing Bike Ride!

We’re ‘gearing’ up for a group bike excursion to experience Design for Distancing installations in seven Baltimore City neighborhoods. We’ll sample goodies from local businesses along the route!

As Spring emerges, we’re setting out to explore some of the 18 public space interventions in local business districts that NDC helped to coordinate through the Design for Distancing program. From Pennsylvania Avenue, to Pigtown, to Waverly, you’ll get a taste of many great Baltimore neighborhoods and hear from local leaders and designers.

Bike More Sites! For avid cyclists, NDC will provide route maps and information to help you explore all 18 sites on your own. Complete the route to win fame and NDC prizes.

We'll be leaving from Motor House in Station North (good proximity to train and bus routes, as well as car parking options) and visiting seven sites over the course of 12 miles! Check in (plus refreshments!) opens at 9:30am, we will leave by 10am, and estimate we’ll be back around 3pm. Sandwich lunch and event t-shirt will be provided.

Starting Address (Lot behind Motor House)
2010 Maryland Avenue

About Design for Distancing

Developed in the summer of 2020 in response to COVID-19 and the challenges faced by local businesses, the Design for Distancing program (in coordination with the Baltimore Development Corporation) called on Balitmore's world class design and public health communities to develop innovative approaches to safe, physically distant gathering. The first outcome of this work is the Ideas Guidebook, a compendium of ten concepts for public space interventions that can be adapted for and installed in cities all over the world. Designs for the Guidebook were solicited through a global call for entries yielded 162 concepts.
These designs served as a jumping off point for the second part of Design for Distancing—Public Space Interventions. Through a $1.5M investment from Baltimore City’s COVID-19 Small Business Assistance Initiative, temporary public space interventions were installed in 18 Baltimore City Districts. Each District was paired with a local design-build team to scope, develop, and implement public space intervention, and the construction was funded through the Baltimore Development Corporation.
Participating Design for Distancing Districts are: Belair-Edison, Brooklyn, East Monument Street, Federal Hill, Govanstowne, Hamilton-Lauraville, Hampden, Highlandtown, Hollins Market, Market Center, Midtown/Station North, Mount Washington, Oldtown Mall, Pennsylvania Avenue, Pigtown, Pimlico, and Waverly.
